The multinational forces in Iraq have denied that the Iraqi army's 5th Battalion was handed responsibility for security in the Green Zone [in Baghdad] during a special ceremony held the day before yesterday. In a press statement, a copy of which has been received by Al-Sharqiyah, the Multinational Forces Media Centre said that the ceremony was held to induct the 5th Battalion into the Iraqi army's 6th Brigade. The statement adds that it will be some time before the Iraqi army is assigned responsibility for security in areas prone to attack.
The Green Zone, situated in the heart of Baghdad, houses the presidential headquarters, parliament and the US and British embassies.
