Earthquake Rattles Sumatra, No Damage
An earthquake measuring 6.7 on the Richter scale rocked Indonesia’s Sumatra Island Tuesday morning, but no casualties or damage were reported.
The quake struck off the west coast of the island at 8:52 a.m. local time and was strongly felt across west Sumatra and outlying islands, witnesses said. They said tall buildings shook and some residents ran from their homes.
The quake’s epicenter was 190 kilometers (118 miles) west of the coastal town of Sibolga in West Sumatra province, Australia’s Special Broadcasting Service reported.
Sumatra has been struck by thousands of aftershocks since a 9.3-magnitude earthquake on Dec. 26 triggered tsunamis that carried devastation across the Indian Ocean. It was the world’s worst disaster in 40 years, leaving more than 220,000 people dead or missing.
