Text of report by Iranian radio on 7 July
The Iraqi ambassador in Tehran [Muhammad Majid Abbas al-Shaykh] has said that the Iraqi defence minister's [Sa'dun al-Dulaymi's] visit to Iran is important for various reasons. He said that relations between Iran and Iraq have entered a new phase.
[Voice of the ambassador in Arabic, superimposed into Persian]. This is the first visit of Iraq's defence minister to Iran. And after 40 years, relations between Tehran and Baghdad enter a new phase. The Iraqi defence minister's visit to Iran and his meetings with the Iranian authorities are, therefore, important for various reasons.
One of the issues discussed between the Iraqi defence minister and the Iranian officials concerned the setting up of a security committee. The two sides reached an agreement in this respect. The two sides also reached agreement to set up another committee for clearing mines [presumably, in the battlefields of the eight-year war along the two countries' borders]. These two committees will be set up soon, God willing, and we shall witness the expansion of bilateral ties.
