Terrorist bombings of London subways and buses killed 45 people and injured as many as 1,000 others Thursday morning, sources told Sky News.
London was gridlocked after five blasts at subway stations followed three aboard buses in the morning rush hour. A group calling itself the Secret Organization Group of al-Qaida of Jihad in Europe claimed responsibility, the Italian news agency, ANSA, reported.
The first five blasts occurred on subway trains, and as people spilled out and began taking buses, bombs began going off on them.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair confirmed a terror motive as he hastily departed the Group of Eight meeting outside Edinburgh for London.
It is reasonably clear there have been a series of terrorist attacks in London, he said.
Various world leaders condemned the attacks, which came a day after London was awarded the 2012 Summer Olympics.
