Hurricane Dennis intensified into a Category 2 storm Thursday, with winds of 105 mph as it moved over the Caribbean toward Jamaica.
Heavy rains lashed Haiti, and forecasters at the National Hurricane Center in Miami said forecasters expect Dennis would hit Jamaica Thursday and pass over Havana Friday night.
A hurricane watch was posted for the Florida Keys Thursday morning, the Miami Herald said.
Late Thursday morning, the storm was moving west at 13 mph near latitude 18.0 north and longitude 75.6 west, about 80 miles east of Kingston, Jamaica. Thursday morning, it wobbled northward somewhat, putting its projected path closer to south Florida.
Watches and warnings were up in the Dominican Republic, Haiti, Jamaica, Cayman Islands and eastern and Cuba.
The ocean in this region has a very high heat content and with the prevailing low wind shear, Dennis could become a major hurricane with 115 to 120 mph winds, said forecaster Lixion Avila.
