Beijing, 10 July: Foreign Minister Li Zhaoxing held talks with visiting US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on 10 July at the Foreign Ministry.

Li Zhaoxing said since the beginning of this year, both China and the United States have actively implemented the consensus reached by President Hu Jintao and US President Bush in Santiago last year in an effort to push for a steady development of constructive and cooperative relationship between the two countries. A few days ago, the two countries' heads of state had excellent talks at Gleneagles, Scotland. We hope to enhance dialogue, mutual trust, and cooperation with the US side, and remove interference, maintain the two countries' common interests and achieve new progress in the Sino-US constructive and cooperative relationship.

Li Zhaoxing said there are some issues that need to be handled with prudence in current bilateral relations. The situation in the Taiwan Strait remains complicated and sensitive. It is hoped the US side will adhere to the one-China policy through real actions and abide by relevant commitments.

Rice said the United States and China have carried out effective cooperation in extensive areas, but there are also differences. The US side expects exchange of visits by the two countries' heads of state this year, and is making preparations for the visits. The US side attaches great importance to and is dedicated to enhancing Sino- US dialogue, hopes both sides will exchange views on a wide range of topics to increase mutual understanding and expand cooperation.

Rice reaffirmed US adherence to the one-China policy and abiding by the three US-Chinese joint communique, saying this position is firm.

The two sides also exchanged views on the nuclear issue of the Korean Peninsula, UN reform and other issues of common concern.

China's Ambassador to the United States Zhou Wenzhong and Vice Foreign Minister Yang Jiechi were present during the talks.
