Residents of Jamaica prepared for the worst as Hurricane Emily moved up the Caribbean Saturday afternoon.
At 2 p.m. EDT the National Hurricane Center in Miami reported Emily 135 miles southwest of Kingston, moving west-northwest at 18 mph with maximum sustained winds of 155 mph.
Forecasters extended a hurricane warning for Jamaica and the Cayman Islands and urged residents in the storm's path to complete preparations to protect life and property.
Commercial activity slowed significantly Friday and airports in Kingston and Montego Bay were closed late Friday night.
Residents of flood-prone areas were urged to evacuate as Emily was expected to dump up to 15 inches of rain, possibly triggering flash floods.
