The Palestinian Hamas group claimed responsibility Sunday for firing mortar grenades at a Jewish settlement that injured four, two seriously, in Gaza.
A statement by Hamas' military wing, Izziddine al-Qassam Brigades, said it fired several shells into Naveh Dekalim settlement west of Khan Yunis in the southern Gaza Strip to retaliate Israeli aggression.
It said the group fired at the Jewish colony also to avenge the killing of Saeed Siyam, a Hamas activist who was shot and killed by an Israeli sniper in Khan Yunis earlier in the day.
Israeli Army Radio said two shells fired at the Naveh Dekalim settlement injured four, two of them seriously.
The Israeli army last week killed seven Hamas members in Gaza and the West Bank town of Salfit as violence escalated in recent days, threatening the fragile truce between the Palestinian factions and Israel that was brokered by Palestinian leader Mahmoud Abbas.
