Former British Prime Minister Sir Edward Heath, called a political giant by Tory heir Margaret Thatcher, died Sunday at 89.
Heath entered Parliament as a Tory from Bexley in 1950 and went on to lead the government from 1970-74. Part of his legacy includes sending troops into Northern Ireland and leading England to strengthen ties with the European Economic Community, said the BBC.
British Prime Minister Tony Blair said Heath was a man of great integrity and beliefs he held firmly from which he never wavered. He will be remembered by all who knew him as a political leader of great stature and significance.
Heath had been gravely ill in recent days, but only a week ago hosted a birthday party at his home.
