Istanbul, 18 July: Iraqi Interior Minister Bayan Jabr [Bayan Baqir Solagh] said on Monday [18 July] that the assassins of the head of the Egyptian diplomatic mission in Iraq, Ihab al-Sharif, have been arrested and put on trial. "Al-Sharif has set up an example of self-sacrifice," Jabr told MENA on the sidelines of an interior ministerial meeting of Iraq's neighbours [in Turkey].
He said that media distorted his previous statements on the issue. "We were closely following the issue until we managed to arrest the attackers and brought them to justice," he added.
He expressed his heartfelt condolences to the Egyptian people for the killing of Al-Sharif.
Following a meeting with Egyptian Interior Minister Habib al- Adli, he said Al-Sharif's assassination came as a great loss to Iraq and the Egyptian diplomacy.
The Iraqi minister further described his talks with Al-Adli as "cordial" and "positive".
He praised Egypt's key role on the regional and international arena.
