Hurricane Emily Hits Mexico Second Time

Hurricane Emily’s 125 mph winds lashed ashore on Mexico’s northeastern coast near San Fernando early Wednesday as a Category 3 storm.

At 6 a.m. EDT, the U.S. National Hurricane Center in Miami said Emily was centered 75 miles south-southeast of Brownsville, Texas, with winds of 125 mph and higher gusts.

Hurricane warnings stretched from Port Mansfield, Texas, to La Cruz, Mexico, and tropical storm warnings extended south to the Mexican beach town of Cabo Rojo and northward to Baffin Bay, Texas, CNN reported.

Hurricane-force winds extended 70 miles outward from its center, while tropical storm winds extended out 160 miles, and NHC deputy director Ed Rappaport said Tuesday south Texas can expect to be hit.

Before dawn Wednesday, the sea had crept about 15 yards closer across the wind-whipped beach on South Padre Island, Texas.

Emily first hit Mexico’s Yucatan Peninsula Monday after battering the Caribbean islands of Grenada and Jamaica, leaving five dead.
