Hurricane Emily is weakening as the once mighty Category 3 storm moves over Mexico towards the United States Wednesday.

The National Hurricane Center in Miami downgraded the storm to Category 2 at 11 a.m. EDT when the eye of Emily was located 75 miles south-southwest of Brownsville, Texas. Emily was moving west at 10 mph with maximum sustained winds near 105 mph.

The hurricane warning for south Texas was replaced by a tropical storm warning in anticipation of Emily’s continued deterioration.

Heavy rain is expected as Emily slows down, threatening flooding and higher than usual tides along the Texas Gulf Coast.

The hurricane hit the mainland at San Fernando, Mexico, Wednesday morning packing 125 mph winds. No casualties have been reported.
