Beijing, 26 July: The Russian delegation at the fourth round of the six-way talks on the Korean nuclear issue, which opened here today, remains optimistic following the plenary session and bilateral meetings with the other delegations.
"After the first day of talks and bilateral consultations with all the participants in the process, the Russian delegation retains a very cautious optimism," Aleksandr Alekseyev, delegation head and deputy foreign minister, told journalists.
Russia's position of principle at the talks has not changed, he said: Moscow continues to propose a "package" solution to the North Korea nuclear issue and seeks to gradually bring the North Korean and US delegations nearer to each other.
New aspects are emerging, he added, and these are being discussed in bilateral meetings.
The most accurate conclusions on the possible outcome of the fourth round are likely to be drawn on 27 July after the second plenary session of the delegations and meetings between the delegation leaders, Alekseyev said. He added that all the parties involved "are inclined towards achieving concrete results".
The two Koreas, Russia, the USA, China and Japan are taking part in the six-way talks.
