Japan Reflects 60 Years After Atomic Bomb

August 6, 2005

The mayor of Hiroshima called for an end to nuclear weapons Saturday at a ceremony marking the 60th anniversary of the world’s first atomic bombing.

No one else should ever suffer as we did, said Mayor Tadatoshi Akiba.

A minute of silence at Hiroshima’s Peace Memorial Park marked the day where over 140,000 people died instantly and thousands more died from the after affects of the U.S. bomb, CNN reports.

The United States dropped a second bomb three days later on Nagasaki, Japan.

Japanese Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi said Japan is taking the lead to abolish nuclear weapons.

Japan and four other countries are in the middle of negotiations with North Korea about that country’s nuclear weapons program.
