Quotes

Al-Adalah [Baghdad, twice-weekly newspaper in Arabic published by the Supreme Council of the Islamic Revolution in Iraq (SCIRI)] 8 Aug: [From commentary by Ali Khlayf] "The constitution has a major task to undertake, namely, to protect people and defend their interests and aspirations\ This fact should be realized by all Iraqis\ Each party should not necessarily get all that it wants, but at the same time it should not be deprived of it completely \ Each should not favour narrow interests to those of other parties \ since we are the sons of one people living on the same land \ We are going through a stage at which all should stand united to establish a free Iraq where no one will be wronged any more \ All should well understand that those who tasted injustice can never allow others to taste it because they felt its bitterness \ The wronged Iraqi people are in need for their men who fought the dictatorship as one, and with a shared concern and one aim. They only have to write the constitution on the same basis that would not have lasted all these years, had it not been for the dear sacrifices being made by the honourable people of Iraq."

Al-Zaman [daily, independent, Baghdad edition of London-based Al- Zaman] 8 Aug: [From commentary by (constitution committee member) Ali al-Dabbagh]

"We believe the writing of the proposed constitution in Iraq will give Iraqis a strong sense of belonging to a nation and to a political system which they make on their own \ The labour of constitution drafting constitutes a clear challenge to the will of the majority who were crushed by mass killings, genocide, poisonous gas against the will of a group that was once in power but overnight lost control to the sound of invading tanks, fleeing to holes and shelters and seeking refuge in neighbouring countries \ This conflict of wills will not end with the writing of the constitution and the referendum on it. Rather, it will surely continue for a long or short period of time, depending on the latter group's conviction that there is a new reality on the ground that is taking its effect, that time has changed and that there is a new history being written for this country, with no chance to turn the clock backward \ The writing and approval of the constitution will be a landmark to be remembered by history. It will testify to the determination of a brave group to draft a higher law representing the finest chain organizing the life of Iraqis who want a secure, peaceful country, willing to live and let others share with them the blessings of security, safety and peace."
