Text of report by special Al-Quds correspondent from Ramallah entitled "PLO Executive Committee member Amirah: Leadership weighs possibility of inviting Hamas, Islamic Jihad to attend Executive Committee meetings" published by Palestinian newspaper Al-Quds on 13 August
PLO Executive Committee member Hanna Amirah has revealed that the PLO leadership is considering the possibility of inviting Hamas and Islamic Jihad to attend the committee meetings while consultations continue to form a national unity government.
In an exclusive interview with Al-Quds following his return from Gaza, where the Palestinian leadership moved temporarily until the completion of the withdrawal, Amirah pointed out that among the ideas on the agenda of the Palestinian leadership, which is in constant session at this stage, is to invite the brothers in Hamas and Islamic Jihad to attend the PLO Executive Committee meetings.
Amirah confirmed the existence of an agreement between the national and Islamic forces and the Palestinian [National] Authority to set up a joint national committee representing all sides to follow up on the Israeli withdrawal from Gaza. Discussion continues on procedural and technical issues related to this committee, he added.
In a related issue, Amirah stressed that all sides now recognize the unilateral authority of the Palestinian [National] Authority and the rule of law, adding that agreement on this principle makes it easy to solve the other side issues.
To strengthen this recognition, Amirah called on all Palestinian forces and factions to agree on the modes and means of resistance following the Gaza withdrawal, which he described as an accomplishment and the fruit of the sacrifices and struggle of people from all factions.
He noted that talk about political pluralism is impossible in light of the multiple armed militia affiliated to this or that organization. He asked: Could there be military pluralism as well in a system that strives to achieve calm, stability and development to serve the people?
Asked on the Palestinian leadership's move to Gaza, Amirah said that this was a temporary move in view of the delicate situation and the need for a broader supervision and follow-up of the ongoing preparations to take control of the areas from which the Israeli settlers and army would withdraw.
He noted that the Palestinian leadership had plans that cover all security, economic, social and legal aspects, noting that it all depended on the situation that followed the withdrawal.
Regarding preparations in Gaza for the Israeli withdrawal on 17 August, Amirah noted that whoever visited Gaza would notice the major preparations under way for the post-withdrawal era. Also, whoever travels in Gaza will fully realize why Israel wants to leave it.
Gaza, he added, has seen widespread destruction in its infrastructure and economy, not to mention the deteriorating social and health conditions. He stressed that people in Gaza needed someone to hold their hands and save them from the tragic situation that they were experiencing.
Amirah called on our people in the West Bank and Gaza not to exaggerate their celebrations marking the withdrawal, adding that the withdrawal was an accomplishment more than a victory because a long political struggle still awaits our people to liberate the remaining land occupied in 1967.
Amirah called on the armed militia in particular not to resort to any acts that might cause tension or lead to collisions with the Palestinian security forces, which will try to maintain law and order and prevent any chaos during and after the withdrawal. He emphasized that the real test would come on the first day of the withdrawal.
In this connection, Amirah called on the national and Islamic factions to organize unified celebrations marking the withdrawal under a single banner, the national flag and to cooperate to portray our people in a civilized manner that befits the level of their sacrifices in the past decades.
