Chechen president says current situation conducive to parliamentary elections
MOSCOW, Aug. 13 (Xinhua) -- Alu Alkhanov, president of Russia's republic of Chechnya, said on Saturday that the current situation in the republic is quite conducive to holding free and democratic parliamentary elections.
The situation in Chechnya has been kept under control. The Chechen authorities should seize the opportunity to finish its institutional construction and hold parliamentary elections, ITAR- TASS news agency quoted Alkhanov as saying.
Alkhanov said a recent survey showed that most of the Chechen people believe an elected parliament would accelerate Chechenya's development.
He also pointed out that the law-enforcement agencies of Chechnya should improve their efficiency and continue to safeguard the social security so as to create a favorable environment for the parliamentary elections.
The elections have been scheduled for late November, but the specific date is yet to be decided by Russian President Vladimir Putin, said Alkhanov.
Putin said earlier that Russia will give Chechnya its full backing to hold parliamentary elections this year, saying the elections would consolidate the security and stability in southern Russia. He also instructed the Russian government to provide tangible support for the Chechen elections.
Currently, the Chechen State Council, which comprises administrative heads and representatives of residents from districts and cities in Chechnya, is functioning as parliament.
