Brazil family says knew London police were lying

August 17, 2005

BELO HORIZONTE, Brazil (Reuters) – The family of a
Brazilian man who was shot to death in London last month after
he was mistaken for a suicide bomber was incensed on Wednesday
after a leaked report revealed a series of blunders by police.

Brazilian electrician Jean Charles de Menezes was shot
eight times by police on an underground train on July 22, the
day after four would-be bombers failed in attacks on London’s
transport system.

“We never believed that story of theirs. We knew that they
(London authorities) were lying,” Maria Beatriz de Figueiredo,
an aunt of Menezes, told Reuters by phone.

Initial reports by London officials said that Menezes was
dressed suspiciously, fled armed police, vaulted over a ticket
barrier and ran on to a train.

The leaked report into the shooting which was published on
ITV News showed Menezes was not wearing a jacket that could
have concealed a bomb, walked calmly through the station even
stopping to collect a newspaper and had already been detained
by a surveillance officer on the train before he was shot.
