Asadabad/Qalat, 19 August: At least one US marine and an Afghan soldier were killed in a clash with Taleban in Marawara District of eastern Konar Province Thursday, US military spokeswoman Cindy Moore told Pajhwok Afghan News on Friday.
The Taleban, however, claimed the gunfight that killed two US and four Afghan soldiers occurred on Friday morning. Taleban spokesman Latifollah Hakimi said a fighter was also injured in the offensive.
Speaking to this news agency over the telephone, Hakimi said Taleban ambushed the US and Afghan forces in the Pata Banda area, northwest of the provincial capital Asadabad. [Passage omitted]
The US and government forces have launched a massive operation in Konar to flush out the insurgents from the area ahead of the landmark parliamentary polls.
