Gaddafi invites Bush to visit Libya: senator
CAIRO, Aug. 20 (Xinhua) -- Libyan leader Muammar Gaddafi has invited US President George W. Bush and Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice to visit his country, visiting US Senator Richard Lugar said in Tripoli on Saturday.
Lugar, ending a two-day trip to Libya, told journalists following talks with Gaddafi that the Libyan leader had expressed "his hope that Bush and Rice would visit Libya," according to reports from the Libyan capital.
Lugar arrived in Libya Friday in another step to normalize relations with the North African country. The trip was the highest- profile US visit to Libya since relations between the two countries began to thaw.
"I noted the dramatic improvement in US-Libya relations, and stressed the US commitment to continually improving relations as cooperation between our countries grows," Lugar said.
Relations between the United States and Libya have improved dramatically after Tripoli accepted responsibility for the 1988 bombing of a Pan Am passenger plane over Lockerbie, Scotland, and agreed in December 2003 to give up the quest for weapons of mass destruction
The United States opened a liaison office in Tripoli in June, marking the resumption of direct diplomatic relations between the two countries after a 24-year suspension.
Gaddafi's son Seif al-Islam said in May that the two countries would open embassies in Washington and Tripoli toward the end of this year.
