The next Catholic World Youth Day is to be held in Sydney in 2008.
Pope Benedict XVI announced the location Sunday as he celebrated an outdoor mass in Cologne, Germany, for an estimated 1 million young Catholics from around the world, the Australian Broadcasting Corp. said.
I think this is a wonderful announcement, I welcome it very warmly, said Prime Minister John Howard. It's a great compliment to Australia, a great compliment to Sydney and very importantly a great compliment to Australia's Catholic community.
World Youth Day was begun 20 years ago by Pope John Paul II.
