Colombo, 29 August: Sri Lankan police have achieved a breakthrough in the probe into the assassination of Foreign Minister Lakshman Kadirgamar, with the arrest of two men believed to have been directly involved in the slaying. Police chief Chandra Fernando said two men arrested a few days ago in Colombo had been directly linked to the 12 August killing of Kadirgamar.
"We are questioning them and we have been able to uncover the entire plot," Fernando told PTI. "We now know how the assassination was carried out." He said investigators were keeping an option open to seek foreign help with the probe. Media reports last week said India and Britain are likely to help with forensic expertise.
Fernando said evidence so far suggested the involvement of the Liberation Tigers of Tamil Eelam (LTTE) in the killing, but the guerrillas have denied any involvement. The authorities are yet to recover the gun used in the killing, but they have found the box in which the weapon had been smuggled in, Fernando said.
