[Presenter] Indian Prime Minister Dr Manmohan Singh voiced support for the presence of US military forces in Afghanistan in an exclusive interview with Tolu TV. This is the first time an Indian senior official speaks about the long-term presence of US forces in Afghanistan.
[Correspondent] India is one of the greatest economic and military powers in the region which supports the long-term presence of US military forces in Afghanistan, contrary to the policy of members of the Shanghai Cooperation Organization [Russia, China, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, Kyrgyzstan, Tajikistan]. Speaking to Tolu TV Dr Manmohan Singh said:
"With regard to Afghanistan I would like to say that the people and the government of Afghanistan will decide about the long-term presence of US forces in their country."
On the other hand, relation between the United States of America and India is progressing well. The Indian prime minister's recent trip to the US and its support of the ongoing process in Afghanistan can mean remarkable changes in the region.
