It is believed unlicenced airguns and hunting rifles from the Papuan province of Indonesia are being smuggled into Papua New Guinea,
PNG's Inter-Governmental Relations Minister Sir Peter Barter says the less powerful weapons are still a threat when used by criminals and can be quite deadly at close range.
Sir Peter, who has visited Weam in the Western province and Jayapura in Indonesia has commended the local police for confiscating factory-made weapons and ammunition from the PNG side of the border.
Sir Peter has also praised police for their efforts in preventing illegal border crossing and arms smuggling.
