Russian, Chinese Leaders Confer By Phone Following Joint War Games

Moscow, 3 September: Russian President Vladimir Putin and his Chinese counterpart Hu Jintao note the positive international significance of the Russian-Chinese military exercises that have been held [on China's Shangdong peninsula on 18-25 August].
A telephone conversation was held between the two leaders today, the Kremlin press service reports.
"Vladimir Putin and Hu Jintao noted with satisfaction the successful conduct of the first joint Russian-Chinese military exercises in history which, they both believe, provide clear evidence of the durability of the strategic partnership relations between the two countries," the press service said.
During the conversation the two leaders stressed the positive international significance of the exercises "which clearly confirmed the ability of the armed forces of Russia and China to conduct a joint fight against the new challenges and threats to the world community".
Putin warmly congratulated Hu and the whole Chinese people on the 60th anniversary of the end of the Second World War which is being widely celebrated at the present time. Hu thanked Putin for the congratulations and said the victory in the war against militarist Japan had been possible thanks to the decisive contribution of the Soviet Army, which will never be forgotten by the Chinese people. In this connection, Hu requested that words of sincere gratitude be conveyed to the people of Russia.
During the conversation Putin and Hu also exchanged views on separate items on the bilateral and international agenda and discussed plans for contacts in the immediate future.
