Text of report by Israel radio on 6 September
Palestinians in the northern Gaza Strip fired a Qassam rocket this evening at the northwestern Negev. No one was hurt. Our correspondent in the south Nisim Qeynan reports that the rocket exploded in an open field.
The Palestinians say that a local youth was killed and two others were wounded by IDF gunfire near Khan Yunis outside the former settlement of Neve Deqalim. Dozens of Palestinians tore down the fence and tried to climb on an IDF [Israel Defence Forces] tank. Palestinian policemen who rushed to the scene did not have time to disperse the crowd. IDF soldiers fired in the air and then at the crowd. The IDF has no knowledge of Palestinian casualties.
Deputy Prime Minister Shimon Peres says that the incident in the Gaza Strip is not surprising since some Palestinians are trying to destroy the peace process by any means. Peres asserted that Israel must not delay its withdrawal from the Gaza Strip and should pull out on schedule.
