Final Voter Turnout in Japan Election Reaches 67.5 Pct

Tokyo, Sept. 12 (Jiji Press)--The final voter turnout in Sunday's House of Representatives election in Japan came to 67.52 pct, the highest in the four Lower House elections since 1996 that were contested under the current election system, according to figures compiled by Jiji Press.
The turnout was up 7.66 points from the previous Lower House election in 2003.
Voter interest was apparently buoyed by controversy over "assassin" candidates deployed by Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's Liberal Democratic Party to eliminate party rebels from parliament in the wake of the intra-party revolt against postal reform bills, among other factors.END
