Seoul, 12 September: A group of 18 young lawmakers from South Korea's governing party appealed for North Korea's right to peaceful nuclear energy, supporting Pyongyang in the key dispute of the six- party talks.
"If North Korea completely dismantles its nuclear programme and makes efforts to become a trusted member of international society, it should be guaranteed the right to peaceful use of nuclear energy," said a joint statement issued by the Uri Party lawmakers.
The lawmakers, who participated in student movements in the 1980s and are mostly in their 30s and 40s, were led by Song Young-kil and Im Jong-seok. Their joint statement will be delivered to the embassies of the United States, China, Japan and Russia, the countries that are participating in the talks.
The fourth round of the six-party talks are to restart in Beijing on Tuesday after a five-week recess. The negotiations hit an impasse over whether North Korea should have a right to peaceful use of nuclear energy, which is opposed by the US
