Tokyo, 12 September: US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice on Monday [12 September] welcomed the landslide victory of Prime Minister Junichiro Koizumi's Liberal Democratic Party [LDP] in Sunday's general election, Japanese Foreign Ministry officials said.

Rice extended her congratulations to Koizumi during a 10-minute telephone conversation with Foreign Minister Nobutaka Machimura.

Touching on various issues, Machimura told Rice he wants to pursue UN reforms including expansion of the UN Security Council in cooperation with the United States.

In response, Rice was quoted as saying the United States wants to continue close consultations with Japan on the matter and reiterated US support for Japan's bid to secure a permanent seat on the UN Security Council, the officials said.

Rice also thanked Machimura for Japan's assistance to victims of Hurricane Katrina, according to the officials.
