Kandahar, 14 September: A top official Wednesday [14 September] said Taleban had gunned down seven people with voter registration cards in the violence-torn Urozgan Province, but the insurgents denied the claim.
Urozgan Governor Jan Mohammad Khan Mohammadi, in an exclusive interview with Pajhwok Afghan News, said the fighters intercepted a car the men were sitting in. On recovery of voter registration cards from occupants of the car, he said, the rebels shot them dead in Gazab District.
But Mofti Latifollah Hakimi, purported Taleban spokesman, scorned the gubernatorial claim as twisted and distorted. He added the fatalities included the district's deputy police head and five policemen, not civilians. However, the governor maintained the dead were ordinary citizens.
