Palestinian Fatah Rejects Remarks By Israel's Peres on Conditional Peace Talks

Posted on: Wednesday, 14 September 2005, 18:00 CDT

Excerpt from report headlined "The battle of liberation and construction" published by Palestinian Fatah Higher Committee website on 14 September

[Passage omitted] The Fatah movement rejects the remarks made several days ago by Israeli vice-prime minister Shimon Peres to Israel radio, in which he said: "It is improbable that peace talks will be held after the withdrawal unless the PNA [Palestinian National Authority] proves that it is capable of controlling the Palestinian territories and that the Palestinians must show that they are capable of controlling Gaza. If they fail to demonstrate this, it would be extremely difficult to resume the negotiations".

It regards these remarks as an Israeli attempt to shirk the obligations of the political process and peace and side-step the Israeli commitments resulting from the agreements concluded with the PLO and from the international road map plan. The Fatah movement considers success in the Gaza experiment not as an Israeli condition but a national obligation, so that Gaza might be the national castle for crystallizing the Palestinian national character. It would be a national springboard for liberating the West Bank and holy Jerusalem and spreading Palestinian national sovereignty over all the Palestinian territories, overland crossing points, harbours and airports. It would remove all traces of the occupation and aggression and particularly remove the racist segregation and annexation wall Israel is setting up in the West Bank and holy Jerusalem. It would connect them to the Gaza Strip through establishing a safe passage for individuals and goods, and complete all requirements and conditions for ensuring Palestinian national sovereignty so that the Palestinian territories will not be turned into a big prison.

As the Gaza Strip breaks the chains and rises from underneath the yoke of Israeli military and colonialist occupation, awakening to a new hope and promise, to the warmth of the sun of freedom over its valleys and lands, this represents a historic step and precedent for dismantling the colonial occupational Zionist scheme, and the beginning of a new era and stage for the advancement of the Palestinian national scheme in accomplishing its objectives in freedom, full national independence, the right to self- determination, and the establishment of the independent, fully- sovereign Palestinian state with holy Jerusalem as its capital.

Blessed be our steadfast Palestinian people in the homeland and the diaspora

It is revolution until victory
