The National Party has taken an early lead as the first votes are counted in the 2005 election. With five and half per cent of the votes counted so far, National has won 43 per cent. Labour has 37 per cent.
New Zealand First and the Green Party are leading the minor parties. New Zealand First has 5.9 per cent, while the Greens are just under the threshold with 4.8. United Future has just over 3 per cent of votes so far.
Results have been counted from only 270 of the more than 6,000 polling booths around the country, so while the final number of voters won't be known until late this evening, the chief electoral officer, David Henry, says there seems to have been a good turnout, particularly in the cities. Last election only 77 per cent of the those who were registered voted.
