Excerpt from report by Radio New Zealand International on 17 September
The man believed to have been the pilot of the plane that caused a high alert over the skies of Auckland has survived the crash. The light plane was stolen from Ardmore Airport this evening, with initial reports that its occupants [plural as heard] were threatening to crash it into the Sky Tower.
However, the aircraft went into the water about 15 metres off the Kohimarama beach shortly after 9.30 [p.m.; local time]. The police say the man on board has been taken under police guard to Auckland hospital and is in a serious condition.
As a large crowd gathered near the crash site, and some of those spoken to by our reporter at the scene say they believe a helicopter forced the plane into the ocean. The police have not been able to confirm this. About 500 people were evacuated from the Sky Tower. [passage omitted: details of evacuation]
