Egypt Mediates With Palestinians, Israel to End Gaza Escalation

Posted on: Saturday, 24 September 2005, 12:00 CDT

Text of report by Egyptian news agency MENA website

Cairo, 24 September: Foreign Minister Ahmad Abu-al-Ghayt has voiced his strong concern over the Israeli raid on the Gaza Strip and the deterioration of the situation in the Strip. He warned against the danger of a return to the cycle of violence and counterviolence.

Abu-al-Ghayt said the use of war planes in threatening and bombarding civilian areas in the Strip was a violation of the international law and a danger to the lives of innocent civilians. He urged the Israeli government to refrain from using military force against civilians. He stressed that the Palestinian [National] Authority [PNA] was the only one in charge of ensuring security and enforcing law in Gaza. He also emphasized the need for all the Palestinian factions to commit to calm and unite around the elected PNA president, Mahmud Abbas, and refrain from all acts that threaten the Palestinian national interests.

Abu-al-Ghayt said Egypt was in contact with the parties concerned to put an end to the escalation and bring back calm.
