All five crew members are feared dead Sunday after a U.S. military helicopter crashed in southern Afghanistan.
The CH-47 Chinook went down during an operation near Day Chopan, in the southern Zabul province, and U.S. ground forces were at the scene.
The BBC reported Afghan officials as saying the helicopter had dropped off troops and was returning to base when it crashed.
There was no immediate indication of hostile fire.
However, Abdual Latif Hakimi, who claims to speak for the Taliban, told the BBC, We brought the helicopter down with an anti-aircraft rocket.
The BBC said a spokesman for the governor of Zabul, Gulab Shah Ali Khil, said the coalition forces were conducting an operation in the Mara area of Day Chopan district.
This was not a regular operation, he said. They did it because they got some intelligence and went there. The crash took place as they were coming back.
