AU official urges Sudan's warring parties to honor ceasefire agreement
KHARTOUM, Oct. 1 (Xinhua) -- An African Union (AU) official on Saturday expressed worry over the recent armed attacks in the Darfur region, calling on the Sudanese government and the rebels to abide by the ceasefire agreement they had signed.
At a press conference here, Baba Gana Kingibe, AU's chief envoy to Sudan, said the recent attacks against refugee camps in Darfur indicated an escalation of tension in the troubled province.
Violation of the ceasefire agreement, signed by the Sudanese government and the rebel groups in 2004, could affect the ongoing negotiation between the government and the rebels in the Nigerian capital of Abuja, he said.
The AU official called on all warring parties to stop any hostile acts.
