Afghan Paper Blames Quality of Army Personnel for Suicide Attack on Them

Posted on: Sunday, 2 October 2005, 09:00 CDT

Text of editorial titled "Why and how the suicide attack on the National Army troops took place?", published by Afghan newspaper Cheragh on 1 October

A suicide bomber riding a motorcycle attacked a vehicle of National Army troops in the east of Kabul -capital of Afghanistan- on 6 Mizan [28 September]. As a result of this attack some people died and dozens more were injured.

This attack, which was the very first of its kind in Kabul, raised concerns among the public because people are yet to forget the factional war and killings in the country.

It is not important who commits such acts because we have witnessed some of them in different parts of the country at different times targeting foreign troops, but the important thing is that this time Afghan troops were the target of the suicide bombing.

As everyone understands, the National Army safeguards national identity and freedom of a country. So, the army should consist of "real Afghans" and should be loyal to the people of that country. As regards the Afghan National Army. you can understand from its deeds how close they are to the people.

Unfortunately, our National Army, which is being reconstructed, has disappointed our people a lot because it is not made of suitable people needed for army.

Another problem is the strange behaviour of our National Army troops vis-a-vis the people because it is being transformed by strangers [foreigners]. Our people do not like such a behavior. Taking this into consideration, the rift between our people and the National Army increases day by day and there is an increased state of mutual distrust between them as well. Therefore, the enemies of peace take advantage of this distrust and carry out these attacks.

Because of this, the Afghan government should bridge the gap between the National Army and the people in order not to let the terrorists making use of this rift. The government should prove to the people that the National Army is for the people and in their service. This is the only way the government can stop the antigovernment forces attacking the National Army troops.
