Posted on: Tuesday, 4 October 2005, 18:00 CDT

Text of report by Iranian TV on 4 October

An Iranian delegation [in Baghdad] met the Iraqi prime minister an hour ago and discussed the issue of the pilgrimage [of Iranian nationals] to holy sites in Iraq. Correspondent Mer'ati has sent a report on this:

[Mer'ati - recording; video shows the meeting] During a formal but sincere meeting, [Iraqi Prime Minister] Ibrahim al-Ja'fari listened to reports by Iraq's Minister of State for Tourism and Antiquities Hashim al-Hashimi and the head of Iran's Hajj and Pilgrimage Organization, Zarhani, about their views on remaining obstacles [in the way of the normalization of relations between the two countries]. Ibrahim al-Ja'fari said Iranian people's love for the immaculate household of the prophet, peace be upon him, is a great honour for the Muslim nation of Iraq. He stressed:

[Ibrahim al-Ja'fari in Arabic superimposed by the Persian voice- over] The two countries' friendship is so strong that such problems could easily be solved.

The Iranian charge d'affaires in Baghdad [no name mentioned] described today's meeting with the Iraqi prime minister as very successful, and said:

[Iranian charge d'affaires] The agreements have almost been finalized and, God willing, in the next meeting between the [Iranian] delegation and the Iraqi minister of tourism, the text of the agreement will be signed.

[Correspondent] It is worth mentioning that that meeting will be held tonight.
