Hurricane Stan Dissipates Over Mexico

Posted on: Wednesday, 5 October 2005, 09:00 CDT

Hurricane Stan was down to tropical depression status Wednesday, with 30 mph winds and heavy rains over the mountains of southeast Mexico.

No deaths were reported from Stan's Tuesday landfall with 80 mph winds near the port of Veracruz, 185 miles east of Mexico City, but there were reports of isolated injuries.

In its final report on the storm, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said at 5 a.m. EDT that Stan could dump as much as 15 to 20 inches of rain in isolated areas, which could spawn flash floods or mudslides.

The BBC said at least 66 people in Central America were killed in flooding and landslides triggered by Stan, which swept across Mexico's Yucatan peninsula during the weekend before moving into the Gulf of Mexico.

Sixty percent of the country is in danger of landslides, El Salvador's President Tony Saca said. The risk caused by this accumulation of water is worrying.
