Excerpt from report by Russian Channel One TV on 15 October
[Presenter] US Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice is holding talks with Russian leaders. Her visit was announced only yesterday. The top US diplomat unexpectedly changed the itinerary of her foreign tour - she postponed her visit to London and arrived in the Russian capital.
Rice met Foreign Minister Sergey Lavrov this morning. After an exchange of handshakes and greetings required by protocol, the politicians began talks behind closed doors. The situation in Central Asia - Rice has just returned from there - and the Iranian nuclear problem were on the agenda. The following statements were made after the talks.
[Lavrov] We believe that the current situation makes it possible to continue working vigorously on the Iranian nuclear dossier through the IAEA [International Atomic Energy Agency]. IAEA inspectors are staying in Iran permanently. They report to the IAEA board of governors on the progress achieved. Therefore, in the framework of preserving the current situation, we do not see any grounds for passing this issue from the IAEA to other organizations.
[Passage omitted: Rice says there is a possibility that the Iranian dossier will be passed to the UN Security Council and a solution to the problem will be found in talks with Iran.]
