Romania Slaughtering Birds in Flu Crisis

Thousands of chickens and other fowl were gassed to death in Romania Sunday on news the deadly avian flu had reached there from Asia.
Saturday, the European Commission confirmed from tests in Britain that the avian influenza virus in Romania was the pathogenic H5N1 strain that has killed at least 60 people in Asia, prompting Romanian officials to act quickly in the eastern part of the country.
We are killing all domestic birds there, burying them. We inoculate all the population in those villages. We have imposed strict measures for consumption of bird meat, Agriculture Ministry spokesman Adrian Tibu told the BBC.
As well as some 17,000 domestic birds in the first village affected, Ceamurlia de Jos, the culling of more than 30,000 more in eight neighboring villages has begun.
The European Union banned imports of live birds and poultry products from Romania and Turkey on Friday.
