Saddam Daughter: Trial is a Comedy

Posted on: Wednesday, 19 October 2005, 09:00 CDT

The daughter of ousted Iraqi President Saddam Hussein called the trial of her father, which kicked off in Baghdad Wednesday, a real comedy.

Ziad Khawasneh, the former president of the Amman-based committee for defending Saddam, quoted Saddam's eldest daughter, Raghd, who lives in Amman, called him shortly after the trial started to tell him she is confident no harm will come to her father.

Raghd hired Iraqi lawyer Khalil Dalimy to defend her father, dismissing the other attorneys who volunteered for the job.

Saddam and seven of his followers are charged with a 1982 massacre in the Sunni-Shiite town of Dujail, about 50 miles north of Baghdad.
