Saudi Measures to Guard Against Bird Flu

Posted on: Thursday, 20 October 2005, 09:00 CDT

Saudi Arabia announced Thursday a ban on the import of birds from Romania, Turkey, Russia and Kazakhstan to guard against the spread of bird flu.

The director of quarantines at Saudi ports Samir Rashid said preventive measures have been taken to confront a possible spread of the flu, including stepping up control of imported goods.

He said an already existing ban on the import of live and slaughtered birds from Asian countries, including Japan, Indonesia, Thailand, China and Malaysia, was renewed.

Special laboratories were also set up to test suspected bird flu cases.
