Paul Routledge: SADDAM SHAME

Posted on: Friday, 21 October 2005, 06:00 CDT

By Paul Routledge

SADDAM Hussein has gone on trial. I hope they hang him, like he hanged my friend, the Observer journalist Farzad Bazoft.

But the farce now taking place in Baghdad is not a proper legal process. It is the summary justice of the victorious Americans and their allies - including us.

The Iraqi judges trying Saddam were secretly trained in Britain, in a project funded by the Department for International Development. Appointed by the US puppet government in Iraq, they believe the death penalty is "entirely right". You bet they do.

This is a show trial to justify the illegal war of two years ago. He must now be executed for barbaric crimes committed in 1982, when he was our ally.

By comparison with this travesty, the Nuremberg trials were a model of legal propriety. Some Nazis even got off!

The Baghdad tribunal is all of a piece with this illegal war - crooked, lying, and a shameful extension of American power.
