HALIFAX (CP) - A passenger plane en route to Britain from Florida made an emergency landing late Saturday after the pilots smelled smoke, airport officials said.
Halifax International Airport Authority spokeswoman Gina Connell said the airport was alerted around 11:10 p.m. local time that an Air Atlanta Europe flight would be diverted to Halifax.
The 747, with about 500 people on board, landed safely about half an hour later.
Emergency response personnel and Air Canada ground handlers conducted a maintenance inspection of the aircraft.
Passengers were allowed off the plane about two hours after it landed, and sent to area hotels.
Connell says no smoke was actually seen in the cockpit.
The plane was expected to depart Sunday after Air Canada completed maintenance on the plane.
