Posted on: Saturday, 29 October 2005, 12:00 CDT

Excerpt from report entitled: "Almost every village accessed: ISPR", published by Pakistani newspaper The News website on 29 October

Islamabad: With every passing day, the rescue and relief operations are progressing in a more coordinated manner in the quake- hit areas, says an ISPR [Inter-Services Public Relations] press release.

Every possible effort is in hand to provide shelter, blanket and warm clothing to the survivors before the onset of harsh weather.

Divisional, brigade and local commanders of the Pakistan Army deployed in the quake-hit areas are personally supervising the relief and rescue operations in all areas.

Various groups have been formed which have been sent to far- flung areas to assess the magnitude of the damages and pass on relief supplies to the affected people. Almost every village, near or distant, has been accessed and being supplied relief goods in Azad Kashmir [Pakistan-administered Kashmir - AJK] and the NWFP [North-West Frontier Province].

In addition to already deployed troops in the Neelum Valley before the earthquake hit on 8 October, more than 3,000 additional troops have been employed in the valley area to carry out relief and rescue operations. [passage omitted]
