Colombian police seize 2 tons of cocaine, arrest 5 suspects
BOGOTA, Nov. 5 (Xinhua) -- The Colombian police seized two tons of cocaine in the northern Caribbean region and arrested five suspects in the latest anti-drug operation, authorities announced Saturday.
Police made the bust in a tropical rain forest between Bolivar and Altlantico departments and the cocaine has a street value of 58 million US dollars.
Anti-drug agents took action after they questioned five people suspected of transporting cocaine to the Caribbean Sea before shipping it to the United States. They were caught moving the drugs on horseback from a cave, police said.
Colombia is a major producer and exporter of cocaine in the world, with an average annual production of 550 tons, mainly bound for the United States and Europe.
The country has stepped up its crackdown on drug production and trafficking since October, when police destroyed 33 laboratories producing basic cocaine paste and captured Jhon Eidelber Cano, a top leader of the powerful Norte del Valle cartel, which is responsible for half of the cocaine smuggled into the United States in the past decade.
