Two tankers collide in Venezuela's Lake Maracaibo

Posted on: Sunday, 6 November 2005, 21:50 CST

CARACAS, Venezuela (Reuters) - Two tankers collided on Venezuela's western Lake Maracaibo on Sunday, but authorities expected key oil shipping lanes to be unaffected by the accident, a port official said.

Local port official Capt. Oscar Ramirez told Globovision television that one of the vessels was being moved from the lake and he said he expected shipping to be clear by Monday morning when operations restarted.

Ramirez did not provide any details about any spillage from the accident or the extent of damage to the vessels.

Venezuela, the world's No. 5 oil exporter, is a key supplier of crude and fuel to the United States. Lake Maracaibo is one of the country's major oil output and shipping centers.
