UN, 8 November: Moscow is convinced that another international meeting on Iraq is needed, Russia's UN envoy Andrey Denisov said today. Addressing the UN Security Council, he stressed that "a meeting on Iraq affairs with a weighty international component is needed at a certain stage because it can promote the internal Iraqi dialogue aimed at achieving nationwide reconciliation".
On Tuesday [8 November], the UN Security Council extended the mandate of the multinational forces in Iraq by one more year - till 31 December 2006, having unanimously adopted resolution 1637. Its draft was submitted by the USA, Great Britain, Denmark, Japan and Romania.
Speaking after the voting, the Russian envoy stressed the importance of the fact that the resolution confirms the fundamental principles of the Iraqi settlement: respect for sovereignty and territorial integrity, and the need for holding a nationwide dialogue. Andrey Denisov emphasized that the document "outlines the prospect that the Iraqi forces will assume the entire responsibility for maintaining stability in the country". "This will make it possible to fulfil the mandate of the multinational forces and withdraw them completely from Iraq," he said.
