Damascus, 13 November: An official source has denounced the reckless statements that the Iraqi defence minister made to Al- Jazeera satellite channel today, 13 November 2005.
The source said the talk about booby-trapped cars entering Iraq via the Syrian border is totally baseless and part of a systematic political campaign targeting Syria and never serving Iraq's interest.
The source said: Syria, which is linked with the fraternal Iraqi people by bonds of Arab brotherhood and common history, is greatly pained at the tragic situation in Iraq. It is also pained to see itself the target of lies and fabrications that seek, among other things, to harm relations between the two fraternal and neighbouring peoples.
The source reiterated Syria's willingness for Syrian-Iraqi cooperation to control the border between the two countries. The source noted that this has not yet been given the required Iraqi response while the campaigns of confusion and slander against Syria continue and escalate.
